The Shaved Duck: Award-Winning Barbecue and Southern Specialties in Tower Grove
Even by the standards of this hardworking South City neighborhood, the culinary team at the Shaved Duck goes above and beyond. They’re up and at it before dawn, firing up the smoker nicknamed Ole Hickory Pits and making everything in house, from fries to bacon. Yes, you read that right—this barbecue joint cures its own bacon, just one of the many ways it sets itself apart.
The claim-to-fame dish is the burnt ends, slow-smoked chunks of brisket that nearly always sell out. Classic ‘cue includes pulled pork, chicken and brisket, but the menu also veers into non-traditional territory with items like smoked mozzarella, the bratwurst burger, and—of course—duck. From there, the combinations get even more exotic, like root beer glaze on the smoked meatloaf and caramelized onion mashed potatoes.
The hard work continues into the night, when attention turns to the bartenders and the craft beer menu. The four taps are often an eclectic collection thanks to the heavy rotation that has one or more changing almost weekly. In bottles, ales and ciders predominate, with a smattering of lagers and stouts, and this is where you’ll find a solid selection of local craft brewers. Choose one, kick back and enjoy the bands that play in the early evening a couple times a week, The Shaved Duck staff will do the heavy lifting.
