St. Louis Home Goods Store Urban Matter Prepares to Move to South Grand
Urban Matter opened in the fall of 2014 on Virginia Avenue in St. Louis’ Dutchtown neighborhood. Since its inception, the store has prided itself on a well-curated inventory of local and national goods, custom lighting, design services and an indoor/outdoor event space. Now the store is preparing for expansion; it will relocate to South Grand in July.
Co-owned by Mary Hennesy and Amy Schafer, Urban Matter offers unique finds to St. Louis residents. Fifty percent of its stock is made in Missouri by independent artisans, including jewelry by Ornate Chaos, Fable & Lore and Mahnal, and textiles by Argaman & Defiance.
Its current location holds a lot of history: Not only is the building more than 140 years old, but Hennesy and Schafer live above the store. However, the upcoming move to the corner of Grand Boulevard and Connecticut Street will allow Urban Matter to double in size and add furniture to its offerings, including items from local woodworker Collin Garrity and Toronto-based Gus* Modern.
And all will not be lost. Urban Matter plans to retain its Dutchtown outdoor event space, which can be reserved for an array of events, from weddings to birthday parties.
The countdown is on to its grand opening on July 20 and grand opening celebration on Aug. 3. Urban Matter’s new location is 3179 S. Grand Blvd. and hours will be 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit the Facebook page or website.
