Velvet Crush

Designers have a soft spot for velvet this season.

Sure, raw denim, studded leather and spiked accessories are cool, but you’ve always been a softy. You appreciate the cozy things in life, which is why you can rightly claim this as “your”season. Thanks to a number of new lush looks—including Proenza Schouler’s zigzagged frocks, Ralph Lauren’s rich, red-carpet-ready gowns and Roberto Cavalli’s filigree-embroidered maxis—velvet, especially in jewel tones, is having a moment. So, not only is it “socially acceptable” to forgo the hard and edgy to drape yourself in the “nap of luxury”—it’s currently being encouraged by fashion’s most infl uential set. It seems George Costanza was onto something.
