Uncorked: Balaban's Welcomes Duckhorn Vineyards At Wine Pairing Dinner

Fine wines from Duckhorn Vineyards combined with Balaban’s chef-driven menu made the January wine pairing dinner a treat for oenophiles and foodies alike at the Chesterfield restaurant and retail wine shop. The five-course meal showcased not only the talents of Executive Chef D. Scott Phillips, but also the nuanced flavors found in the Duckhorn family of wines.

Highlights from the meal included the opening course of sweet sea urchin and Maine lobster tossed with squid ink angel hair pasta, which was paired with a 2012 Chardonnay from Duckhorn’s more affordable “Decoy” line of wines. The fourth course was also memorable with a blush breast of squab on a bed of braised greens with sliced figs that was topped with a seared slice of foie gras. This course was paired with a 2011 Napa Merlot, which played well with seasonal flavors though the third course’s wine, the 2010 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, was favorite amongst the table. A classic combination ended the meal in the form of a chocolate cheesecake served with a dollop of mousse that was paired with the 2011 Decoy Zinfandel.

After the meal, guests could easily find bottles of the same Duckhorn wines in the retail shop that offers more than 650 labels. The wines found among the racks at Balaban’s range from great values to sought-after vintages for a true collector’s cellar. Gourmet foods and unique gift baskets are also available for purchase from the retail shop.
