Too Cool for School

The Ivy League look is back in fashions curriculum, and collegiate ties are the CliffsNotes to acing the class.

Fall 2011 runways—rampant with loafers, letterman jackets, corduroy and tweed—read like the updated scripts of preppy-clad classics like “Animal House” and “Family Ties.” Shows that spelled out the season’s top staples (including Moschino, D&G, Gant by Michael Bastian and Ralph Lauren) may as well have been scheduled for an Alex P. Keaton field day. While you could scream fashion’s current alma mater in a new collegiate wardrobe, heavy in striped sweaters and plaid suits, partaking in the Ivy League trendcan be as simple as scooping up neckwear in shades of Dartmouth green and Princeton orange. A good semester-long investment, work the look through winter—and take note of the lesson learned: It’s never too late to bone up on the classics.
