This Week's Dish: International Dine Around Showcases South Grand Eateries, Praise The Lard Murphysboro Barbecue Cook-Off Celebrates Competitive BBQ
Diners from all over St. Louis can sample plates from the vast array of South Grand restaurants and bars during their flagship fall event, The International Dine Around, on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 5-10pm. The international progressive dinner features 19 South Grand businesses including City Diner, Café Mochi, Lulu’s Local Eatery, Mangia Italiano and Tower Grove Creamery, just to name a few. For $35, or $30 in advance, guests receive a ticket for an appetizer, entree, dessert, drink, and wild card in exchange for food and drinks from a South Grand business. “The International Dine Around will give new and regular visitors to South Grand a chance to try something they don’t normally eat or drink on South Grand,” says Rachel Witt, Executive Director for the South Grand Community Improvement District.
Mike Mills and daughter Amy Mills of 17th Street Barbecue are hosting the 27th Annual Praise The Lard Murphysboro Barbecue Cook-Off on Sept. 18-20. The long weekend full of festivities celebrates competitive barbecue and the almighty pig. On Thursday, Sept. 18, they’ll have a fish and wings competition and a fish fry with live music. During the Townsend Spice Kids’ Cue, introduced last year, teams compete to make the best burger, judged on appearance, tenderness/texture and taste. They’ll also have a Bloody Mary contest with Brews Brother Taproom.
On Friday and Saturday, 17th Street Barbecue is also hosting the World Food Championships’ Southern Illinois Showdown in conjunction with Praise The Lard. Right behind the restaurant, 60 home cooks, chefs and restaurateurs will face off in one of three culinary categories: Bacon, Sandwich and Seafood. The winners in each category will win $1,000, and the top three in each category will receive a Golden Ticket to compete at the WFC event in Las Vegas in November. 32 N. 17th St., Murphysboro, 618.684.3722
