The Easy Fall Fashion Rulebook
With all of the trends, fashion weeks, shopping wishlists and options for fall fashion tips, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and be unsure of what you should consider for your own wardrobe. Here are eight of our favorite—and easiest—tips to keep in mind when getting ready for fall.
/ Practice creative layering. During the seasons of transition, it’s easy to refresh your wardrobe without buying much—if anything—just by using the creative layering techniques that virtually every brand has mastered. If there was only one fashion rule for fall, this would be it.
/ Re-fall in love with the hoodie. In the Midwest, the vast majority of us are passionate about both comfort and athletic gear. This season, the high fashion runways have finally caught up to us and showcased hoodies in a way they hadn’t been seen: as must-have fall fashion staples. Wear an over-sized option with slim pants and heeled ankle boots, or layer under your favorite vintage tees for an update on classic grunge.
/ The overcoat isn’t just for old men. It’s actually a perfect “throw on over anything” way to stay warm once winter hits. For a stylish and eco-friendly option, we love this one by Fauxgerty.
/ Yes, velvet is still “in.” Every time you get the urge to rid yourself of anything velvet, just don’t. Velvet is still a great go-to for fall and winter dressing, in silhouettes from classic and vintage to modern and trendy.
/ Comfort is key. Gone (for now…) are the days of body-cons and sky-high stiletto heels. Instead, pair your sneakers with everything from dresses to sequined jackets, making the comfortable shoe your favorite footwear option.
/ All denim everything. You can’t go wrong with anything denim this season—and that includes virtually all fits, styles and washes for pants, jumpers, jackets dresses, bags and even boots. The more worn-in, the better.
/ It’s all about vintage accessories. From delicate beaded bags and hats to Art Deco-style earrings and cinched belts, keep your vintage-hunting game strong by focusing on statement accessories that you can mix and match with pretty much any other trend on this list.
/ Throw a pin on it. A little flair goes a long way. This year, adding pins and patches to your favorite bombers, moto jackets, cardigans and denim is a great way to refresh last year’s go-to staples.
