Derek Blasberg is the life of the party. The 32-year-old writer and best-selling author is always on the go, thanks to multiple editorial roles at Harper’s Bazaar, V Magazine and VMAN. He has the unique position of working within the fashion scene as an observer and a partaker: From party to party, he shakes hands and shares smiles, casually remarking “Hot dress,” to a bevy of starlets and VIPs.

A Missouri boy at heart, Blasberg quickly climbed the ranks of the tough New York fashion circuit, trying his hand at a variety of writing endeavors after his graduation from New York University in 2004. During his first “big-time” gig at Vogue, Blasberg was quick to make a name for himself on the social scene, rubbing elbows with a hip crowd of front-row regulars (Chloë Sevigny, Lauren Santo Domingo) and freelancing at major publications like Harper’s Bazaar, W, Women’s Wear Daily and the New York Times. Just before his current role at Bazaar, Blasberg was the Editor-at-Large of Style.com, where he wrote a column called the Blasblog chronicling the fashion world’s parties, events and gossip.

His quick escalation into the world of social status, designer gowns, celebrities and caviar led the budding writer to one of his most well-known achievements—a spot on the New York Times bestseller list. His first book, “Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady,” is a humorous collection of essays and illustrations about 21st-century etiquette. The book was so successful that Blasberg released a second edition a year later as an expanded and revamped version of the original.

When he’s not working at one of his several publications, Blasberg serves as founder and editor of MrBlasberg.com, where he talks as candidly about his affections for his hometown of St. Louis as he does the latest red carpet party. Blasberg visits the Lou frequently, making rounds between city hotspots, trips to the Lake of the Ozarks and weekend jaunts, often with other fashion A-listers, to his aunt and uncle’s farm just south of the city. “Heaven knows I don’t need a reason to go home,” wrote Blasberg on his blog. “I post as many pictures of Karlie Kloss at a European fashion week as I do on the Blasberg family farm in Hillsboro, Missouri.”

Most recently, Blasberg returned for a weeklong stint in August, when he attended the Miley Cyrus concert at the Scottrade Center to hang with his bud (and Cyrus show opener) Lily Allen. Chronicling his hometown escapades through his blog and Instagram, Blasberg took Allen on a local’s tour of the city: Drinks in The Grove, Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, Imo’s, the Delmar Loop—even a late-night dance session on the East side.

Despite fame and high society connections, Blasberg’s true Midwestern spirit shines through the glitz and the glam. From the St. Louis suburbs to the streets of New York City, Blasberg is quick to share his story as a Missouri boy who hit the big time. “St. Louis is a special place,” wrote the editor on his blog. “Trust me.”
