STLFW: ALIVE On the Scene at the Saint Louis Fashion Fund Emerging Designer Competition Presented by Brown Shoe Company
The Saint Louis Fashion Fund Emerging Designer Competition presented by Brown Shoe Company proved that fashion is alive and well in St. Louis, as top emerging designer talent and some of the most powerful names in fashion descended upon the Union Station runway.
The six finalists in the competition included designers Collina Strada, Harbison, Wai Ming, Daniella Kallmeyer, Jessie Liu and Remi Canarie, each vying for a chance to win the competition’s $15,000 award, presented by Brown Shoe Company.
The Saint Louis Fashion Fund, in collaboration with STLFW, spearheaded the competition, led by Saks Fifth Avenue Marketing Director Tania Beasley-Jolly and Fashion Fund chair Susan Sherman.
The competition winner, designer Daniella Kallmeyer, was determined by a panel of industry experts: New York Fashion Week creator Fern Mallis, Refinery29’s Editor-In-Chief Christene Barberich, fashion financier Gary Wassner, renowned fashion designer and former CFDA President Stan Herman, designer Tess Giberson, Saks Fifth Avenue Senior Fashion Director Colleen Sherin and VP of Marketing for Naturalizer Marci Ranger. Harbison, who first showed at STLFW’s spring event, was presented with an impromptu runner-up award generously funded by Gary Wassner.
West County Center held a runway presentation while the jurors deliberated on the grand prize, featuring looks from Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and more.
As St. Louis’ fashion elite waited for the show to begin, standing-room-only crowds gathered to fill the Union Station Midway, mingling with other guests and sipping Pinnacle Vodka cocktails, Redd’s Apple Ale, Peroni and Skinnygirl wines and viewing the luxury vehicles of Mercedes-Benz of St. Louis. They also shopped BUTIK, STLFW’s official designer marketplace—a treasure trove of designers and on-trend pieces with more than 25 curated makers, including Michael Drummond, Paulie Gibson and Saint Rita Parlor.
A pre-show still model presentation of Designers to Watch included Michael Drummond, Paulie Gibson, Nasheli Ortiz, Trang Nguyen and Truly Alvarenga.
After a People’s Choice vote, Alvarenga’s Pink Elephants Designs won a $2,500 award and the official title of STLFW Designer to Watch.
Saint Louis Fashion Week continues tonight with the Yigal Azrouël, Tess Giberson and Timo Weiland Runway Show + Saint Rita Parlor Fashion Presentation. See the STLFW website for more info.
