Making the list for Best Chef Midwest were Gerard Craft of Niche, Josh Galliano of The Libertine, Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Café, Ben Poremba of Elaia & Olio and Kevin Willmann of Farmhaus. Only Poremba is a first-timer to the list, with Craft having four prior nods as a nominee. Willmann, Nashan and Galliano have also made it as semifinalists for Best Chef Midwest in recent years.

Another James Beard list with a local name is the Rising Star category with Rick Lewis from Quincy Street Bistro. Lewis has only been at the helm of Quincy Street’s kitchen since 2012, but his focus on cooking from scratch has certainly attracted nation attention.

Stay tuned for the next round of selections when the finalists for each category are announced, which will be on March 18 in Chicago. The winners will be declared at a gala in New York City on May 5.
