Recently Ringed: Krista Brown, 22 and Dustin Attarian, 23
How We Met: Dustin and I met in middle school, at Academic Athletic-Academy Busch in 1998. I remember seeing him walk into the gym the first day of sixth grade and nudging the girl sitting next to me, and whispering, “He’s cute!” Years later, we went to separate high schools and kept a close friendship. One week after passing his driver’s test, Dustin picked me up for our first date at Ronnie’s 20 Cine and we saw Bend It Like Beckham. We began our relationship after (when we were both 16), fell in love and dated all throughout high school and college (I went to Fontbonne University and Dustin attended SIUE for undergrad, where he is currently earning his Master’s).
The Proposal: After about six years of dating, Dustin decided it was finally time to pop the question. Dustin later revealed he had an elaborate plan of surprising me at work during lunch (I am a Teach for America teacher) and had even called my boss to set up the half-day off. But, as St. Louis weather would have it, a lovely blanket of snow covered the city and I had a snow day on the planned day. So, instead, the proposal was spur-of-the-moment—we went driving around the Holly Hills neighborhood, trying to figure out where to buy a sled so we could go sledding. All of a sudden, Dustin quickly pulls the car over and parks next to Carondelet Park and cranks up the radio, which was playing one of our favorite songs, “Say Hey (I Love You)” by Michael Franti & Spearhead. He jumped out, opened my car door, got down on one knee in the snow, pulled out the ring and asked me to marry him.
