Two newly engaged St. Louis couples share their love stories
Katie Sweet, 25 & Ryan Henson, 30
Occupations: I am a Customer Information Specialist at Allsup, Inc., and Ryan is the owner of Bluffside Farms Landscaping.
The Proposal: Ryan surprised me with a proposal when we were out on Table Rock Lake for a nighttime boat ride listening to a some music blues. Right before Ryan proposed, fireworks started going off in the distance. It was a complete coincidence, but was the perfect backdrop for that moment—I thought it was pretty much the epitome of an awesome proposal!
First Sight: It was about four years ago, and Ryan was doing landscaping at the preschool where I was working at the time. My boss urged me to go outside and offer him some lemonade—cliché, I know! I didn’t have the courage to say “hello” that day, but I kept my eye on him from then on.
First Date: We had dinner at Sage in Soulard and then went to a few other places for drinks.
Believe It or Not: We are rather competitive and cannot so much as enjoy a cordial video game together.
Our Song: “Sweet Little Angel” by B.B. King
Together, We Like to: Go to Cardinals games, enjoy nights out in the Lou, do jigsaw puzzles and watch cooking shows. Our ideal date night is to have dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, order two slices of cheesecake with strawberries and head home to demolish our desserts while snuggled up on the couch!
The Big Day: November 10, 2012 at Piper Palm House in Tower Grove Park, with reception at The Franklin Room.
Kylah Brown, 32 & Dustin Green, 34
Occupations: I am a freelance writer and the co-owner of Torta Bella Cakes and Confections. Dustin is a property investor and remodeler.
The Proposal: The engagement wasn’t a surprise; we picked out the ring together. But, he did get down on one knee and ask while we were having a glass of wine in our backyard. He was really nervous and clumsy, which I found endearing.
Our Story: Dustin and I went to John Burroughs together (he was a year above me), but I left after 9th grade and went to boarding school on the East Coast. I moved to LA in 2008 after five years abroad in Indonesia. I was on Facebook one day and Dustin’s name popped up under “people you may know.” I sent him a message saying, “I don’t know if you remember me from school, but I just moved to LA, and I don’t have any friends, so I was wondering if you’d like to get a drink sometime.” When he picked me up for that drink, he looked a lot more grown up than the 10th grader I remembered! We celebrated our fourth anniversary in March.
Believe It or Not: Although Dustin is very generous, he’s not very romantic. One day, I told him I’d like flowers from time to time. The next day, when I came home, there on the kitchen counter was a single carnation (he’d picked it up from Schnucks) sticking out of a plastic Llewelyn’s cup. Can’t blame a guy for trying!
The Big Day: September 15, 2012 at Oliva on the Hill. Our wedding colors are green and brown, like our last names.
