ALIVE: What does your career as a consultant consist of?

FM: It’s a wide variety of initiatives and projects, and my freedom allows me to do things that I really find interesting. I am on the board for a couple of companies—Indian jewelry company called Tara and the Robert Graham Company here in New York—and I consult for Charleston Fashion Week and Saint Louis Fashion Week.

I have a radio show on Sirius XM called “Fashion Insiders with Fern Mallis,” in addition to live New York Fashion Week coverage that will air every day on Starz. I am also very, very proud of my interview series that is now in its fourth year called “Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis” at New York’s 92Y, which has just taken off. The series is actually being turned into a book that will be published by Rizzoli that will document the life stories of some of the personalities I have interviewed. The final manuscripts are actually being finished now.

ALIVE: What would people be surprised to learn about you?

FM: I don’t know that with a name like “Fern” if this is surprising, but I love to garden. And cook!

ALIVE: When and where are you your happiest?

FM: In my Southampton home—it’s at the edge of a beautiful lake. It nourishes me and it’s very difficult for me to leave.

Catch Fern as a judge at the Saint Louis Fashion Fund’s Emerging Designer Competition Presented by Brown Shoe Company on Oct. 15 and leading the panel at the Saint Louis Fashion Fund Discussion on Oct. 18.
