My So-Called Necklace

The ’90s are back in the form of retro ribbon chokers.

Not since Marc Jacobs’ memorable Fall 1992 collection for Perry Ellis has grunge been so top-of-mind among the fashion forward—but this time around, the hype isn’t defined by flannel shirts and skull caps motivating “Teen Spirit.” Instead, it’s sophisticated chokers—reinvented staples of Goth cliques and Nirvana groupies—that have been making noise. On the spring runways, Lanvin and Marc Jacobs debuted dramatic takes, embellished with butterflies and feathers, respectively. And, thanks to Fall 2011 collections by Vena Cava and Michael Kors, it’s clear the style has staying power that surpasses year’s end. While you could opt to pair the piece with a crushed velvet babydoll dress and graffitied Docs, the necklace itself will undoubtedly suffice as your necessary nod to the ’90s this season—especially if it comes in a “Heart-Shaped Box.”
