Meet The STLFW Designers To Watch (And When You Can Vote For Your Favorite)

On Oct. 15, the Emerging Designer Competition presented by Brown Shoe Company will kick off with a Designer to Watch cocktail hour featuring five fashion designers, four of whom are from St. Louis. Attendees will choose one outstanding designer to receive a $2,500 cash prize—presented by ALIVE Magazine—through a people’s choice vote . Luckily, we have some local favorites and a few newbies who are sure to catch your attention.

1/ Michael Drummond

This is Michael Drummond’s fifth time presenting with STLFW since winning Saint Louis Fashion Week Project Design Emerging Designer Competition in 2009. A “Project Runway” veteran (season 8) whose client list includes Tika Sumpter and Heidi Klum, Drummond is honored to present once more in his hometown of St. Louis. His work has been showcased alongside Alexander McQueen, Viktor and Rolf, Maison Martin Margiela, Iris van Herpen and Pam Hogg.

2/ Paulie Gibson

Paulie Gibson is sartorial stimulation for the modern man. The line brings quality apparel to customers through boutiques, major retailers and online. Gibson’s thoughtful design, fabrications, and silhouettes are new to the American menswear market, bridging the style gap internationally. The pieces are unique and proudly stand out in a crowd. Gibson’s mission is to simply outfit the customer through all parts of life.

3/ Nasheli Ortiz

Nasheli Juliana Ortiz designer Saint Louis Fashion Week Fall 2014

Nasheli Juliana Ortiz was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Ortiz studied fashion design from a young age, completing her MFA in Savannah College of Art and Design. She got her professional start as an apprentice working in the workshops of Hipolito Peña in Dominican Republic, and also with Oscar de la Renta, Toñelly Cepeda for Donna Karan New York and Cristiani di Roma in Italy.

Truly Alvarenga of Pink Elephants Designs concentrates on creating one-of-a-kind, sophisticated and edgy couture designs with intricate layers of detail. Her work encompasses the full fashion spectrum: From radical and inspired leather jackets and dresses, to bathing suits both sexy and frilly, to elegant evening wear. Her designs evoke both the naivete of youth and the courage to go from “mild to wild” in the same collection.
