Homebrewer Dave McWilliams walked away as a champion from last November’s first single style beer brewing competition at Ballpark Village Brew Fest by Budweiser. His reward? To have his American IPA brewed alongside a professional at Anheuser-Busch’s Research Pilot Brewery in December, which will land on draught at the Budweiser Brew House this Sunday, Jan. 18.

“It was a competitive set of beers, but Dave’s winning brew received strong remarks from the entire Anheuser-Busch Taste Panel. It’s very rewarding when we can share what we do with the local brewing community. Truly a win-win as we learn from them and they better understand our approach,” says Scott Vail, General Manager, St. Louis brewery, and Judging Panel Member.

The recipe for the American IPA had been in the works for a long time, and featured a pale malt called Golden Promise that contributed to its rich flavor as well as Simcoe hops and a yeast called 1056. After the homebrewer’s beer made it to a larger-scale version last month, McWilliams along with officials from the brewery and Ballpark Village, got to taste the final product at The Biergarten on Jan. 8. McWilliams, who is a member of homebrew clubs Garage Brewers Society and STL Hops—was pleased with the overall turnout of the brew.

“I enjoy brewing and attending beer festivals,” he says in a statement. “This wasn’t really about winning so much as about the friendly competition between me and my fellow homebrewers.”

Be sure to stop by for the unveiling of the American Style IPA—which will remain on tap until it runs out—at a special release party open to the public this Sunday from 1-5pm at the Budweiser Brew House in Ballpark Village.
