Break out the big hats, ladies—the Kentucky Derby is this weekend, inspiring us to sprinkle a little Southern charm into our wardrobes. We’ve pulled together three looks that throw a little unconventional flair into the mix, encouraging you to step out of the box this race day.

From left to right:

  • Instead of a traditional floral dress, go graphic with pops of pastel, adding a chunky sandal to keep the look fresh and day-to-night appropriate. DIY tip: In lieu of flowers, add materials like feathers, chiffon and ribbons to a plain sunhat to create a look that’s 100 percent unique.
  • For those who want to look casual-cool, a simple straw hat paired with a crisp white dress and bright colored high-tops gives your look a youthful edge.
  • A brightly colored monochrome hat looks excellent with a black and white ensemble. Instead of a dress, try a wide-leg trouser and blouse in mixed prints or color-blocked to keep the focus on that fabulous hat.

Need a happening event to sport your new look?

ALIVE will be hosting the most fashionable Derby party in town on Saturday, May 3  at Humphrey’s Restaurant and Tavern. The festivities kick off at 3pm, and will be the perfect combination of sports and style—with all event proceeds going towards charity partner, Buddy Fund. Sip on mint juleps, mingle and participate in our “Best Dressed” contest; with our tips, you are sure to snag a mention! Visit the ALIVE website for tickets and information. See you there!
