Just John Gives Back To STL With Pride

 In Culture

You can’t miss the stately, historic two-story brick building on the east side of The Grove. This venerable edifice has housed a series of bars over the years, some long-lived and some just flashes in the pan. But when the now-familiar script signs went up in 2008 proclaiming it as the new home of Just John, this space became something more than just a neighborhood watering hole.

Of course, Just John is still a bar: It’s one of the most popular drinking establishments in the area, and one that continually ends up on local “Best Of” lists. With big screen TVs, continual drink specials, the best DJs and live music in the area and a constant stream of special events, there’s something here for everyone. Plus, with its soaring ceilings, dual bars and spacious patio, there’s a ton of room to enjoy it all and party the night away, and plenty of smiling staff members on hand to ensure a good time is had by all.

But there’s so much more to Just John than a fun space that serves up tasty drinks and hosts the best parties around. Just John is a gay bar where everyone is welcome, a place where guests can bring their parents and have them feel comfortable. It’s also a welcoming space for everyone in the LGBT community to congregate in a spirit of inclusion and safety.

The success of Just John owes as much to the bar’s inclusive nature as it does to its propensity for giving back to the community that supports it. Over the years, the business has become a philanthropic anchor for the LGBT community, supporting a wide variety of good causes of all types, like the upcoming Bartender Review on Jan. 17. This event will benefit columnist and author Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign, which has a mission of supporting gay, lesbian and transgender youth. Over the years, Just John has supported a host of other charitable causes as well, including St. Louis Effort For AIDS, Gateway Men’s Chorus, Pride St. Louis and Gateway Pet Guardians, among many others.

Generosity, honesty, inclusion and a good drink–these elements form the heart and soul of Just John. Truly not just a bar, it’s an institution.
