Jewelry: The Perfect Fit

St. Louis brides-to-be say “yes” to custom engagement rings.

Every girl wants the perfect engagement ring, but it’s not easy task to find “the one” amidst hundreds of local jewelers and thousands of rings. That’s why customization is becoming more and more popular among St. Louis brides.

“I’d say 99 percent of the rings I sell are not the ones on display, but custom designs,” says Igal Alon, owner of Mavrík Fine Jewelry, a Kirkwood-based jeweler specializing in diamonds, fine gems and original jewelry.
Whether you’re shopping alone or as a couple, it helps to do some research before you hit the stores to learn the lingo, get comfortable with what’s out there and begin forming an idea of what you want. Alon spends about 10 minutes with new customers to educate them about the basic structure of a ring and the endless possibilities for customizing the design while staying within a budget.
“Many of the customers who come into my shop have no idea of the style they want when they begin; we help direct their search through questions about her personal style and lifestyle,” Alon explains. “Does she prefer yellow gold or white gold? Is her clothing style more contemporary or vintage? All of these things come into consideration when designing a ring.”
No matter where you go, a good place to start is with the five Cs of diamonds: carat, color, clarity, cut and certificate. Color and clarity have a lot to do with the price of the diamond and are measured by ratings that indicate where it falls on the quality scale—from colorless to light yellow, or from no flaws at all to very small ones that aren’t visible to the naked eye. The cut determines the style of the ring and how the center stone will be set in the band.
The next step is to start shopping. Visit several diamond shops to see what’s out there and what qualities strike you as attractive in different rings. If you don’t absolutely fall in love with any of the rings on display, don’t settle—consider customization instead.
Use the jewelry displays as a source of inspiration and a showcase of what’s possible rather than a rigid selection. Figure out what elements you like about several different rings, then sit down with the jeweler and work out a design that combines all of them. The result: a perfect ring no one else can ever claim.
The turnaround for custom engagement rings varies. At Mavrík, it takes about four weeks, once the design is finalized. Giving a nod to Mavrík’s motto that “the customer is the designer,” Alon names each customized engagement ring after the bride-to-be it was created for—a nice touch any groom can use to his advantage.
