 In Style

Join the two dozen local organizations presenting Innovations in Textiles, a celebration of the art of textile design and production from Oct. 2-4. Each participating gallery and studio space will feature exhibitions of fiber arts and presentations by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. The weekend’s festivities are organized by the Craft Alliance Center of Art and Design, a non-profit organization committed to fostering an inclusive arts community and providing education to St. Louisans about contemporary work.

The first event in the lineup on Oct. 2 features a free self-guided gallery hop and a sewing workshop entitled “Finding the Magic in Disappearing Fabrics.” The workshop is led by Cindy Hickok, an acclaimed embroidery artist, at the Craft Alliance Delmar Studios from 10am-4pm.

Begin the day on Oct. 3 at 10am at the Contemporary Art Museum attending a lecture by keynote speaker Jenelle Porter, a senior curator at the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art and author of many books. Hop on the Innovations Bus Tour that begins at the CAM following the keynote speaker to continue the day’s festivities. Munch on a boxed lunch of your choosing as you stop for a gallery talk by Larry Krone at the Sheldon Art Galleries at 11am, a presentation by curator Nina Ganci at the Regional Arts Commission Gallery at 1:15pm and a curator talk with Jane Sauer at the Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design at 2pm.

Those with energy to spare should consider continuing on to a talk by Meredith Malone, a curator of modern and contemporary art at the Kemper Art Museum at 3:15pm, then finish up the day at Art Saint Louis from 6-9pm for a reception.

On the final day of Innovations In Textiles, Oct. 4, venture to Fiber East for a self-guided tour of fiber arts that includes visits to artists’ studios and galleries. Beginning at 10:30am at the Sun Smith-Foret Studio, hear a talk called Private Art/Public Practice. Spend your afternoon at a studio presentation by Lillian By Design at 1:30pm followed by a 3pm artist talk and reception for the Material Revival Exhibition.

The weekend of Innovations in Textiles is the perfect opportunity to pick and choose from a long list of events to find a few that particularly suit you. Plan to leave the exhibition with a new favorite artsy, cultural space and a keen eye for the latest in textile design, ideal for spotting the latest fall fabrics at the STLFW Kickoff Party runway show!

Admission to all gallery talks is free. For more information and a comprehensive schedule of events, visit Craft Alliance.
