In Season: Spice It Up
Summer is bursting with sweet and delectable fruits ripe for the picking. From apples and blackberries to pears and plums, this is the season to indulge in nature’s sweet tooth. But, there’s one summer fruit that’s often overlooked: the pepper. Like the apple, with its many varietals and degrees of sweetness, the pepper comes in all shapes, sizes and levels of spiciness. These colorful fruits are also jam-packed with vitamins A, C and K, which help prevent cell damage and maintain strong eyesight and a healthy immune system. The savory red pepper holds the most of these vitamins while its spicier cousins like the ghost pepper or the habañero chili pepper are bursting with capsaicin, which not only provides the heat, but also helps decrease cholesterol.
