How To Determine Your Decorating Style

 In Feature, Style

While some folks have pinpointed their tastes to a T, others have a hard time establishing and refining their personal style, which can create spaces that are a bit all over the place when it comes to decor. The key to interiors that are inviting, relaxing and organized is honing in on your style without trying to inject too many different kinds of “stuff.” Here are a few tips that can help you determine your decorating style.

1/ Lifestyle. Determine the functionalities you need a space to have, in addition to ways that the space can compliment your lifestyle. For example, do you need a good amount of storage? Space for a small office area? Extra seating for entertaining? Making a list of necessities and features you need your space to fulfill is a great way to start figuring out what you will actually put to good use.

2/ Colors. Choosing a color palette can be overwhelming if you don’t have anything in mind, but after taking inventory of your lifestyle and needs, it gets a bit easier. You can choose colors based on what compliments your existing furniture, room use and functionality (will there be kids playing in the room? Maybe steer toward darker colors that hide grime), or generally choose your favorite color and go with that. You would be surprised with how many people decorate a room based on a color scheme that they don’t actually like.

3/ Create a mood board. An easy way to narrow down your tastes is to look at various interior design concepts and pinpoint what you are drawn to visually. Pinterest is an easy way to search a wide variety of decor per room. Chances are, you will be drawn the most frequently to a specific style, which in combination with the tips above, can lead you to a divine decorating intervention.
