Hit the Right Cords
Thanks to a number of new incarnations, casual corduroys have “whooshed” in as menswears most stylish go-to.
Ever since denim became permissible on Casual Fridays, few fabrics have threatened its supremacy in the versatility department—until now. Thanks to labels from J. Crew to Current/Elliott turning out cool corduroy pants in countless combinations of wale widths and warm tones (gold, olive, rust), the style is burgeoning as the choice grab-and-go. But, before you go “whooshing” from work to play, be sure you’ve chosen the pair that is most appropriate. Thick wales (vertical ribs) are best worn in rich colors and give off a more casual vibe—but, as they add heft, should be reserved for the slim set. Conversely, thin wales (called “pinwales”) are more Monday-through-Thursday-friendly—and forgiving. Pair your pick with pieces of comparable heft (a cardigan, cable-knit sweater or peacoat) and just-as-versatile wingtips all winter. Be sure to keep denim in your wardrobe rotation, though—because sometimes, silence is golden.[Top to bottom] Benson cords available at Moris Fashions, Central West End, 314.361.6800.
