Guy Files: 7 Men's Skincare Products We Love
With so many products out there to choose from, it’s no wonder why so many men are clueless in the skincare department. A ton of these products are marketed specifically for men, but labeling it so does not always make them the best choice for a man’s face.
A skincare routine can be as simple or complex as you choose to make it. Every regimen should include products to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize. You can get everything you need out of those three steps. You also don’t need to spend a fortune on good skincare. There are plenty of amazing high-end products out there, but there are also affordable products that are just as effective to maintain your mug.
Below are seven products that I think are great for their performance and value. You certainly don’t need to run out and buy all of these, but trust me—you should have at least one of them in your arsenal.
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser: This cleanser is one of the best on the market. You simply cannot beat CeraVe for the price. This is an excellent option for men who have oily or sensitive skin. It’s gentle, fragrance-free and won’t strip the skin of its natural protective barrier. Ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid promote healthy texture and cell regeneration. ($11.99 at most drug stores)
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser: Much like its aforementioned brother, this cleanser gives a lot of bang for your buck. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is just a better option for dryer skin types. It contains several ingredients that mimic the structure and function of healthy skin. Even though this product will balance moisture production for drier skin types, it’s still light enough to allow your skin to breathe, reducing blemishes and breakouts. ($11.99 at most drug stores)
Clinique Mild Clarifying Lotion: This is one of my favorite products of all time. Mild Clarifying Lotion de-flakes the skin’s surface to reveal smoother, clearer skin. It contains 0.5% salicylic acid, an essential ingredient for anyone battling blemishes and blackheads, and will also eradicate ingrown hairs after shaving. Put it on a cotton ball and swipe over your skin’s surface, or splash it on like an after-shave. ($13 at Sephora)
Uppercut Deluxe Face Wash: This cleanser, specifically marketed to men, makes the list because of its dual-purposed nature. It is sulfate-free, and will deep-clean the manliest skin without leaving it tight or drying out your skin’s natural moisture barrier. It also contains gentle exfoliating beads that could eliminate the need for a separate exfoliating product for some guys. ($18, Notch)
Paula’s Choice Skin Balancing Moisture Gel: If you are a guy with oily skin who typically avoids using moisturizers, Skin Balancing Moisture Gel might be perfect for you. It supplies skin with key anti-aging ingredients while the smooth, gel-like texture absorbs quickly and has a soft matte finish. It’s so light that it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a moisturizer at all! ($26, paulaschoice.com)
Peter Thomas Roth Ultimate Creme: My skin is very dry, and I’ve struggled to find a moisturizer that keeps my skin feeling hydrated for more than a few hours. This heavy-duty facial moisturizer is only for dry to very dry skin. Although this is pricey, it’s worth considering if you need a long-lasting emollient product that reduces fine lines and wrinkles while remaining super-hydrating. ($48, Sephora)
Vanity Protection Perfection Creme Sunscreen: This product is my favorite thing right now—and its local! A sunscreen is a must for every skin type. The harmful rays of the sun are the leading cause of lines and wrinkles in the skin. I have had a really hard time with sunscreens in the past due to my skin’s sensitivity to them. Apparently, this is a common problem with men. Master Aesthetician, Jill Alaimo, of Vanity says, “I love this sunscreen due to its weightlessness. It’s chemical-free and has an SPF50. Even the most acne prone, oil productive people can use it without incident.” ($31, Vanity)
Josh Nichols is a 15-year industry veteran who is a nationally recognized expert in hair styling. A St. Louis native, Josh attended Current Trends Academy and went on to become a top revenue stylist at the award-winning American Image Salon in Chesterfield. Josh opened his first salon—Josh Nichols Studio—in 2010. He has since expanded his services, added employees and relocated to Clayton, renaming his salon KINK Salon in 2012. His latest project, Notch, a men’s barbershop concept, opened August of 2014 in The Grove.
