Guy Files: 5 Men's Skincare Products To Help Beat The Heat
Summer in St. Louis is a time in which we can truly appreciate all of the amazing things this great city has to offer. From pool days to outdoor concert festivals and food truck Fridays, outdoor activities are in full bloom. The sun is also out in full force, beating us with its UV rays, and as great as that sun feels when it hits your skin, the after-effects aren’t always fun. Besides getting burned in all that sunshine, the long-term effects of the sun can cause premature aging in the form of unwanted lines, wrinkles and sunspots. It’s essential for us to protect our skin from harmful UV rays, and it’s actually very easy to do.
The following products are my favorite choices for beating the heat. Whether it’s sun protection, pasty skin, or parched and perspiring pores—I’ve got you covered with these great products:
Clinique for Men UV Defense 50SPF
Protecting facial skin daily from UV damage is the BEST way to prevent signs of aging that may show up later on down the road. This is especially important this time of the year when we are most prone to spending our time basking in sunshine. However, it’s no secret that finding a facial sunscreen that doesn’t feel heavy, greasy, or just plain gross can be an incredible challenge. This is where Clinique’s new UV Defense SPF 50 excels, as this ultra-lightweight formula contains a patent-pending “Invisible Screen” technology that’s imperceptible on skin while providing high-level, broad spectrum sun protection. ($29.50, Sephora)
St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse
I have struggled to find a self-tanning product that would fulfill my dreams of having a natural looking golden glow. Past attempts have left me streaky, splotchy, or looking like an oompa-loompa. I also hate waiting for it to dry, or waiting to shower while smelling and feeling disgusting. St. Tropez has changed my mind—it’s easy to apply and you can see exactly where you put it, ensuring you don’t end up with tiger stripes (it also smells better than its less desirable counterparts). A word of advice: Buy the applicator mitt to get the best application while keeping your hands free from stains. ($32 for 4oz, Sephora)
Neutrogena Wet Skin
I recently bought this product for a Caribbean vacation. My pale skin always burns on the beach, no matter how often I reapply. I applied this sunscreen in the morning, reapplied twice, and spent the entire day in the sun. Much to my surprise, I didn’t burn. For the first time in my life, I even had a little bit of a golden glow from my time spent basking. If this product can keep me from looking like a lobster, then I can safely assume it will work for everyone else, too. Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunscreen is specially formulated to be applied to wet skin for sun protection. While ordinary sunscreen can drip off when wet, this cuts through water and provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. ($11.99, Walgreens)
Axe Night 48-hour Antiperspirant Stick
I know that we all laugh at the ridiculous commercials where Axe Body Spray makes you irresistible to women. You know what will absolutely not make you irresistible to anyone, though? Sweat. The heat of summer can make you leak from your pores like a faucet, leaving stinky stains in its wake. Axe White Label Night antiperspirant stick has a refreshing fragrance to keep you confidently fresh dry for 48 hours. Honestly, I haven’t tested the two-day claim, but it definitely won me over in 95-degree heat after a run on the beach. ($4.69, Walgreens)
Evian Facial Spray
Women have known about this stuff for years. It’s an excellent product for setting foundation for even makeup application. It also happens to be amazing for refreshing parched skin on a hot summer day. Guys, spray this on your face once, and you’ll be hooked. It’s balanced, neutral pH makes it great for any skin type and will cool you down instantly. Safe, natural nitrogen is used to propel the droplets (80 percent of the air we breathe is nitrogen) while not harming the ozone layer. ($12.50, Sephora)
