Guy Files: 5 Essentials For A Perfect Shave
Let’s face it, when it comes to shaving your face, things have become a little too complicated. Razors come with up to seven blades on them now (which makes them about seven times more expensive to purchase), and there are enough shaving creams on the market to give you a headache just trying to find the right one for your face. Honestly, there are a lot more bad products out there than good ones. I’ve tested plenty of them, and I’ve found that it’s best to stick to the basics. Believe it or not, shaving doesn’t need to be fancy, or expensive: It just needs to be efficient. You can trust these stubble-busting tools to keep your face smoother than ever:
1/ The Safety Razor: This is a classic, manly, stylish tool for shaving your face, and surprisingly, it only has ONE double-sided blade in it. The truth is, five blades in your razor will give you five times the irritation as you drag them across your delicate skin. The safety razor is more accurate, requires much less pressure, and causes virtually no irritation when used correctly. You want the blade at about a 30-degree angle on your skin for a perfect shave. There is a bit of a learning curve, but when you can buy replacement blades for as little as 13 cents on Amazon, it’s worth the practice time. At the cost of a box of replacement blades for other inferior razors, this classic model is a beautiful thing. The razor itself will run an average of $30.
2/ Proraso Shaving Cream: This Italian import has been around since 1948 and the company has stayed true to its original formula. The green tube that started it all is good for every skin type, but you can find it in four different formulas for specific skin profiles. Menthol and eucalyptus refresh and energize the skin, while giving you a supreme glide for your razor. ($7.59, Amazon)
3/ Crown Shaving Co. Shave Cream: This “classic-made-modern” shave cream can be applied with your fingers or a shaving brush. It contains only the finest natural ingredients for a close and comfortable shave. Fragrance of eucalyptus and spearmint will wake you up in the morning and the natural, lightweight oils will hydrate the skin and give glide to your razor. It rinses clean, leaving you smooth as a baby’s bottom. ($24, Notch)
4/ Lab Series Razor Burn Relief Ultra: Most post-shave balms include at least one irritating ingredient in them, but Lab Series created a product that is completely free of them. This product soothes redness, razor burn and bumps, prevents ingrown hairs, and keeps your skin feeling great. Its ingredients even help to speed up the skin’s natural healing process. A little dab of this balm goes a long way, making it a great value! ($34, LabSeries.com)
5/ Wahl Shaver Shaper: I can’t shave my skin every day because my skin is just too sensitive, but this little miracle machine is a lifesaver. It’s great for in-between shaves, and is particularly useful at my beard line. The hypoallergenic “dynaflex” screen makes the shaver’s head flexible, letting it curve to the shape of your face without nicks or cuts. This is a tool you will find in most barber’s arsenals, so you know it’s durable. It can be used corded or cordless, making it a great option for travel. Its also a great value for the price. ($50.95, Amazon)
