Gerard Craft Wins Best Chef: Midwest James Beard Foundation Award

Yesterday, chef-owner Gerard Craft won his first James Beard Foundation Award at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, as Sauce Magazine reports. Craft, who has brought St. Louis Taste, Pastaria, Niche, Brasserie and will open Porano Pasta & Gelato Downtown this year, has previously been a finalist six times.

This win makes Craft the first St. Louis chef to win the award. The other finalists for the Midwest honor this year were Michelle Gayer (Salty Tart) from Minneapolis, Justin Carlisle (Ardent) from Milwaukee, Paul Berglund (The Bachelor Farmer) from Minneapolis and Lenny Russo (Heartland Restaurant $Farm Direct Market) from St. Paul, Minnesota.
