St. Louis Fashion Week is celebrating its eighth year supporting the city’s designers, boutiques and retailers by announcing expansion plans that will take the event from a five-day format to a 10-day lineup of runway shows and events. I had the pleasure of attending the Manolo Blahnik event at Saks Fifth Avenue, where the luxury retailer was showcasing the Spring 2013 Manolo Collection, as well as giving attendees the chance to design a pair of their own! Buyers could choose from four iconic shapes with customized heights. Once the perfect shape and height were picked, it was off to peruse the endless swatches of colors and textures–everything from basic black to robin’s egg blue and lime green, to name a few. The Fall 2013 shows brought out the fashion world’s elite, but NEMO really kicked their fashion know-how into high gear. With icy slush covering the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week grounds, it was a challenge to walk in flats. Of course, that didn’t stop many from busting out their 6″ space wedges and cutout wooden heels. While flowing tresses are often overlooked for stunning dresses, the backstage beauty at Timo Weiland demanded our attention. Trends flowed freely from the hands of some of the nation’s most talented hair stylists, makeup artists and manicurists. Natural talent, learned skill and years of experience fill the tiny rooms behind the runway. And like fashion design, trends evolved at the mercy of beauty greats Chantel Miller (MAC Cosmetics) , Joseph Dimaggio (L’Oréal Professionnel) and Erin Giddings (Zoya).
