On Thu., Aug. 15, Michele Coen-Racanelli and Matt Galati opened the doors to their much anticipated burger joint, The Dam. Attached to the adjacent Amsterdam Tavern, a watering hole catering to soccer enthusiasts, The Dam serves a mix of American classics and European pub fare. Juicy, hand-packed burgers are served up with Belgian-style fries accompanied by housemade mayo-based sauces, as are the pub-style fish and chips. All-beef kosher hot dogs are dressed up five different ways, while the “sausage of the day” and “veggie tempura of the day” offer a rotating selection of options. And pretty much anything on the menu can be topped with chili.
Coen-Racanelli runs the front of the house—the tiny room has just a handful of barstools in the windows, by the way, so be prepared to get your order to go if need be—while Galati holds court in the kitchen. The two have collaborated in this way many times before, notably at Onesto, Mad Tomato and the former Big V’s burgers. If you were a fan of Big V’s, you’ll be glad to know that the restaurant’s most famous burger, The Animal—a triple burger with American cheese, grilled onions, jalapenos, bacon and barbecue sauce—has been resurrected at The Dam. And by the way, The Dam’s burger just won the People’s Choice award at ALIVE and Sauce Magazine’s Top Chef event Aug. 18.

The drink selection is non-alcoholic—mainly a selection of sodas from local Excel Bottling Co.—and that may be because all the booze is in their Irish Carbomb Cupcake, a chocolate cake made with Guiness in the batter, filled with a Jameson Irish Whiskey panache and topped with Bailey’s Irish Cream frosting. Of course, you can always place your order with The Dam and head next door to Amsterdam Tavern for a cold pint and some soccer on the TVs. The two businesses have carved an order window into the wall that separates them for food to be passed through.

The Dam is open Monday-Wednesday from 11am to 9pm, Thursday from 11am to 10pm, and Friday from 11am to 11pm. No weekend hours have been posted.
