Delight All Your Senses at This Year’s Opera Tastings

The Opera Tastings series, hosted by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, snatches opera from the confines of the theater and reinvents it for a different audience in venues from Edwardsville to Catawissa and all across St. Louis city and county. Celebrating a new kind of expression, each event pairs opera with a unique menu created by some of the region’s finest restaurants, chefs, sommeliers and mixologists.

The series will see St. Louis staples such as Elizabeth Schuster (Tenacious Eats) and David Kirkland (Turn) dazzle your palate, while a quartet of singers—Teresa Castillo, Rehanna Thelwell, Edward Graves and Robert Mellon—expand your love of music.

For those new to opera, Opera Tastings is an easy and fun introduction to this art form. Attendees will hear hits from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and “The Marriage of Figaro,” Bizet’s “Carmen” and Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess,” all the while savoring delectable dishes and drinks that complement the flavors of the music. The setting is casual and relaxed, and audience members are encouraged to stay after the performance to share a drink with the musicians and continue their crash course in operatic history.

The 2019 Opera Tastings series kicks off on March 31 with two events: an eclectic aria-inspired cuisine-and-wine pairing at The Venue at Maison du Lac in Catawissa, followed by a performance at Catrina’s in Edwardsville featuring artisan Mexican cuisine. And, later in the season, the city’s foremost private-dining club—the Saint Louis Club—will open its doors, showcasing its elegant decor and exceptional cuisine to ticket-buyers for the program on April 9.

With this clever culinary concert series, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis hopes to continue to change the common misconception of opera as posh and elitist. Opera does not have to be stuffy, expensive, boring nor full of divas. On the contrary, Opera Tastings proves that it is as accessible as good food. It’s an experience everyone can enjoy, like eating something new and exotic for the first time.

The 2019 season of Opera Tastings is March 31-April 9. All-inclusive tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the event homepage.
