Are you keen on seeing new, original art created right here in St. Louis? If so, Open Studios STL happens this weekend, June 21-23, and offers the public a chance to take an intimate look at the studios of over 150 artists currently working in the city.

Don’t know where to start?  The website for Open Studio STL makes it simple, offering maps, times and locations of important events, and a listing of guided tours offered around the city.  Here are some more quick tips:

  • Start the weekend off artfully with the kick-off party at the Contemporary Art Museum tonight starting at 6pm. In partnership with KDHX, the event features music by KDHX DJ BobEE Sweet of Uncontrollable Urge, refreshments, and conversation with the local artists, and is a great way plan your weekend and maximize the experience of Open Studio STL. Free and open to the public.
  • Get the scoop on the route and artists ahead of time. New this year, the Open Studios STL mobile website provides the full list of participating artists and events as well as a searchable map.
  • Take advantage of the tours offered.  There are bus tours available, or, if you feel like stretching your legs, there are also cycling and walking tours.  Select groups are conducted by leading St. Louis historians, art writers and curators.  Are you an architecture aficionado? Well-known public historian Michael Allen directs a bus tour that explores the city’s public art and important buildings.  On an alternate tour, arts and culture writers Jessica Baran and Stefene Russell take participants on a hand-picked tour of various artists studios.  You also have the chance as a group to explore the up and coming Old North City as it’s being revitalized, or immerse yourself in the eclectic and colorful Cherokee Street neighborhood.
