Stand out with the bold, chunky accessory of the season.
“A cocktail ring is the antithesis of the wedding ring; it announces no status other than the desire to have fun.” When I first read writer Linda Grant’s description of the accessory I recently befriended, I immediately regretted the many years I wrote off chunky rings as too sophisticated, due—at least in part—to their associations with Elizabeth Taylor and my grandmother’s jewelry box. These days, however, my hands sparkle, and I agree with Grant; albeit a bit frivolous, there is something so fabulous about piling-on fine jewelry when not traditionally obliged.
It’s not to say that those wed or betrothed can’t weigh down their every finger with nugget-sized gold (they can—and should, especially this season. Hot for fall, designers including Monique Lhuillier, incorporated the baubles into their runway shows.); the comparison is merely about what one’s jewelry implies. For instance, a wedding band? “I’ll be in a committed relationship til death do us part.” A cocktail ring? “I like to go bold, and be the center of attention; ask me where the party is.”
