Change And Authenticity, February 2017: Uranus, Aquarius & Current Transits

 In Culture, Guide

The Sun moved into Aquarius on Jan. 19.
Aquarius is ruled by Uranus and resonates with freedom, authenticity, intuition and seeing past the limits of the status quo. Our inner Saturn agreed to physically incarnate and conform to the seeming limits of this time-space dimension, but our inner Uranus, orbiting just beyond Saturn, intuitively knows what our five senses cannot perceive, and prompts us, like the Aquarian Star Trek, “to go where no man has gone before.”

Planet Uranus wasn’t discovered until 1781, though it has always played a subversive role in the unfolding of human culture and evolution. Discovered during the American and French revolutions, it inspired change toward democracy and freedom around the planet. This radical, collective expression of freedom was necessary to allow the individuation we needed to eventually grow out of abstract and moral religion and into experiential and soul-guided spirituality.

On a personal level, Uranus urges you to not get trapped in the illusions and limited thinking of the physical world. It’s a guide from your larger soul, maintaining a helpful, though sometimes disruptive influence on your ego. Conscious of it or not, it gives you the information you need to stay true to your soul’s lifetime intention. As Uranus comes into play through the cycles of your life, you feel an increased tension around what is out of integrity. On your birth chart, the signs, houses and planets touched by Uranus will reveal the themes and issues emphasized during those times.

Particularly, at age 38-43, Uranus reaches the halfway point of its 84-year orbit and sits exactly opposite its natal position. This profound life passage relates to what has traditionally been called the “midlife crisis.” Whatever choices you’ve made by way of lifestyle, commitments and values are tested against your feelings of authenticity. What falls short becomes less tolerable. Your desire for change grows urgent. Depending on how true you have been to your soul’s path, this can be a radical and disruptive revolution in your life, or acceleration and deepening of your established life path. Changes will happen, voluntarily or not. It’s a natural part of our growth cycle. Resistance creates suffering.

On the collective level, we are in a similar “crisis” of vision and authenticity regarding our organized systems and institutions. During Aquarius, awareness of this dissonance is demanding our attention more than ever. And just as on the individual level, once we see past the limits of the status quo, there is no going back, even if the necessary changes bring us some chaos, challenges and pain.

New Moon Jan 2017

Current Transits
The New Moon on Jan. 27 is in Aquarius and features an accentuated Uranian theme. Within the ongoing tensions between squaring change-agent Uranus and power-mongering Pluto, we see opportunistic Jupiter oppose Uranus, boosting urgency for change and a willingness to abandon traditions to explore new possibilities. Saturn, as it trines Uranus, lends practical discipline and/or karmic consequence to experimenting with innovations in government, business and technology.

Collectively, we can see the new president acting out these trends in his unique and disturbing way. On a personal level, the same conditions apply as we all scramble to respond to the ongoing, unpredictable changes. That same Saturn-Uranus trine boosts all of our abilities to act with “disciplined nonconformity.” In the arch of history, nonconformity eventually evolves into the norm. With Saturn squaring Venus, it’s a good time to set intentions on stepping through resistances to asserting our inspired creativity in our relationships and in society. Chiron sits with Venus, lending a healing vibration. The key is to choose love, not fear, which lets your courage, compassion and inner wisdom shine.

Jupiter turns retrograde (appears to go backward) on Feb. 6, thus prolonging its expansive and truth-seeking focus on Libra, the sign of justice, relationship, equality, diplomacy and fairness. This year, all of us will be touched by lessons in these areas, in ways that hopefully will cause us to grow and be inspired.

On Feb. 10, a Full Eclipse Moon marks an important shift in planetary dynamics. Lunar and solar eclipses come as groups of changing light, all falling within a particular axis on the zodiac for 18 months at a time. For this past 18 months, eclipses have all been in the axis of Virgo-Pisces. As they now move into the Leo-Aquarius axis, it’s time to shift the dry Virgo energies of analysis, criticism and “being right” to the inspired Leo energies of passion, creativity and “being brilliant.” At the same time, it’s about directing the Pisces energies of devotion, faith and imagination into the Aquarian energies of community, collaboration and progressive innovation. As one of the most powerful solar eclipses to sweep across the United Sates in a hundred years comes next August, these themes will be in full play. So, this milder lunar eclipse in February serves as an introduction. Set your intentions.

The February full moon continues all the major aspects of the previous new moon, with two important additions. In this configuration, the Saturn-Uranus trine neatly cradles the full moon opposition axis, boosting the importance of its role for this year in balancing the Uranian drive toward individual freedom, progressive change and innovation with the Saturnine themes of practical discipline and responsible planning.

On a personal level, this time between the two moons is good for carefully thinking through your personal and social options for the coming year in the face of highly likely, but unpredictable and impactful changes. Have a plan with options, and then, most importantly, be ready and willing to innovate your plan as events unfold. Sudden change may come from within as well as without.
