Behind The Scenes: ALIVE's March Fashion Feature
Translating a historically inspired story onto the pages of a modern day publication is no easy feat, but for the team of a few local creatives, the transition was seamlessly captured onto the pages of ALIVE’s March issue.
Photographer Attilio D’Agostino, Guest Creative Director (and Marketing Director of Saks Fifth Avenue) Tania Beasley-Jolly, Stylist Sarah Stallmann, makeup artist Sharday Johnson and hair stylist Valerie Brown have turned the classic tale of Alice B. Toklas into a fashionable rendezvous with the past. Alice, the long time partner of author and artistic figure Gertrude Stein, was a passionate eccentric lover of art, culture and life. To capture her story, the team set their location at the immaculate home of Mary Strauss, local fashion-lover, philanthropist and art collector in her own right. Her historical home set the perfect backdrop for our new-age Alice, giving life to a truly unique fashion feature.
Mary Strauss’ beautiful salon was the perfect backdrop for our modern day Alice. Although more extravagant, there is no denying its obvious resemblance to the salon of Gertrude Stein.
Mary’s bar-room was a favorite of the crew and featured a large Josephine Baker image (one of many—Mary is an avid collector), vintage stemware and decanters and gilded wallpaper.
