Beauty Files: Behind The Scenes At Our Latest Photo Shoot
Makeup does not consist of just cosmetics but skincare as well, and one could argue it is the most important step. The healthier the skin, the easier the makeup goes on top. Our model for our January fashion editorial—Latvian beauty Sija—had been busy traveling from Scotland, to Texas, and finally to St. Louis where I had the task of revitalizing her dehydrated skin. Since this is a common problem in the harsh winter months, here’s how to incorporate the steps I used into your own personal routine:
To calm the skin from the winter elements, use Soothing Face Mist from Glossier; and to moisturize and prime all-in-one, Lait-Crème Concentré from Embryolisse. Reduce any puffiness or dark circles by using the Icelandic Relief Eye Pen from Skyn Iceland. The eye relief pen contains Saponaria, a flowering plant that contains potent stem cells that have been proven to stimulate cell rejuvenation, reduce the depth of wrinkles, firm, de-puff and improve elasticity.
To create the “moody but clean, strong warrior woman” look we were going for; prime the eyes with Groundwork Pro Longwear Paint Pot by MAC. True to its name, it leaves a long-wearing color that you can use as a base to make any powders put on top appear more vibrant, non-creasing, or just leave by itself for a beautiful cream eye shadow.
On top of Groundwork, and in the crease, use Omega eye shadow, tan pigment on the center of the lid and Antiqued eye shadow on the outer corner. As a highlighter under the brow and inner corner of the eye, dust on Vanilla pigment—all eye products by MAC. To complete the look, try #06 Blonde Ambition Sephora 12HR contour eye pencil in the waterline, brush Smut MAC eye shadow into the lash line, and top it all off with Lash Sensational mascara by Maybelline.
For a lip look like Sija’s, again, start with skincare. Glossier’s Balm Dotcom is a great base. Not just a lip conditioner, it’s a hydrating, long-lasting, do-everything skin salve packed with antioxidants and natural emollients to nourish and repair dry, irritated skin. On top of that, use MAC’s Stone lip liner and Siss lipstick, and Urban Decay’s Freestyle Naked Gloss.
For perfected skin, apply Makeup Forever’s Ultra HD Stick Foundation and then add color to the cheeks with Gingerly blush by MAC and continue the highlight around the orbital bone to the tops of the cheeks with Vanilla pigment.
Hopefully this will inspire you to try some new products, or if nothing else, try a new style of makeup. Like I always say: you aren’t tattooing it on! To see the final fashion editorial in its entirety, snag a copy of ALIVE’s Good Vibes Issue on stands December 21.
