The awards recognize restaurants around the world with outstanding wine lists, and the restaurant and retail wine store in Chesterfield earned a nod in particular for their inexpensive wine pricing. The Best of Award of Excellence names restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections that pair well with their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine aficionados. Only 883 restaurants worldwide received the award.

In order to be eligible for a Best of Award of Excellence, a restaurant must maintain a wine list of 400 or more selections—Balaban’s surpassed that with more than 800—as well as achieve superior presentation and display of “significant vintage depth or superior breadth in one or more major wine regions.”

The original Café Balaban, located in the Central West End for more than 20 years, garnered awards of excellence from Wine Spectator for 13 years. In 2009, Balaban’s reopened in Chesterfield, where partners Steve McIntyre and Brian Underwood added a retail wine shop. Soon after, they won an Award of Excellence in 2011 and stepped up to a Best of Award of Excellence the next year in 2012.

The awards are featured in the magazine’s August issue, on newsstands July 22. 1772 Clarkson Rd, Chesterfield, 636.449.6700
