BUSY MOM: My husband and I are about to have our second child. We’re extremely busy juggling all of life’s responsibilities right now and having trouble deciding where to cut things out. How do we find balance?

Dear Busy Mom,

How to create balance is the question of the ages. It’s at the core of our human experience, is it not? Fortunately, it’s also the centerpiece of wisdom that astrology offers us, giving us precise insights into each of our journeys toward balance and consequential wholeness.

You didn’t give me your husband’s birth stats, so I can only speak about your relationship to your question. Your North Node in Taurus in the 4th house speaks loudly to the essence of your concerns. Karmically, you are drawing from lifetimes in which you were focused on being a high achiever in the public arena (10th house). Typically, this also involved high-stakes, power struggles between strong egos. It often meant you subordinated your own ego needs to others, sensitive to emotional energy, but not participating in it for your own nurturing (Scorpio). Though these experiences added to your soul’s eternal wisdom and mastery, you got out of balance within the polarity involved (Scorpio – Taurus). You lost touch with the ability to live from your own values and give yourself and your loved ones emotional security and comfort. Now, in this lifetime, you are here to learn how to create stability, reliability, pleasure, comfort, gratitude and emotional nurturing in your home and family life.

It’s entirely appropriate that you should be asking this question at this time in your life, not just because you are expecting a second child, but also because you are about to complete your Saturn Return. Saturn takes 29 years to journey around the zodiac. When it returns to where it was when we were born, at age 29 and age 58-59, Saturn themes dominate our life for a couple years. At age 28-30, life tends to enforce limits, structure, definition, and accountability. We may experience the removal of people or situations that distract us from our soul’s purpose. That can happen by force or voluntarily, though typically there is some feeling of reluctance involved, even pain. On the other hand, we may be given new responsibilities, or levels of responsibility that may at first feel onerous, yet at some deep level, we are aware that it is good for us and we grow into it.

Where Saturn sits in our birth chart points to insights for each of our own personal challenges within the Saturn Return. For you, Busy Mom, Saturn is in Sagittarius in the 12th house. Sag is about expanding your conceptual understandings of reality and the meaning of life. The 12th house is about grounding those understandings into a devotion that helps you actually experience your self as the spirit that you are, connected to the divine oneness of all that is. This is your clue, Busy Mom, to how to create balance in your life, this time round.

Saturn’s prodding influence is for you to deepen your spiritual understanding of emotional energy and incorporate devotional practices like meditation and yoga into your routines. If this feels like a stretch to you right now, know that in the long run, these kinds of things will prove more important and rewarding than those illusive career and community goals that might feel more familiar and easy. Spending some time questioning the source of your values and ambitions could be healing and inspiring. As Saturn transits into your 1st house and crosses over each of those planets in Capricorn, the need for clarity and priorities will only intensify, so better to get ahead of the curve, so it can feel less like discipline and more like growth.

You will notice that you have five planets in Capricorn in your 1st house. This indicates a strong carry-over of past life talent for achievement and creating order. However, in this life, it’s intended for use for your self, aligned with your own values, not necessarily for the world at large. Yes, you are entitled to a career, but fulfillment will come in this life if you limit the energy you give to your career to the intention of maintaining an income, not conquering the world. By applying your natural sense of ambition to your personal life primarily, you will intuitively find the ways to bring order and balance to your life.

With all that Capricorn, it’s not likely you are destined to be a homebody for long periods, so you’ll need to find a mothering philosophy that fits who you are. With Aries on the cusp of your 4th house of home and family, you’re likely to teach your kids to be independent and self-resourceful. That will serve them well, and you, if you remember to lean heavily into the emotional nurturing part of it all, too.
