Arts + Culture News: New Grand Center Hotel Name To Be Revealed Today

The St. Louis Regional Arts Commission recently announced its call for applicants for the 2016 Place-Based Community Arts Training (CAT) Institute. The CAT Fellowship will be awarded to 16 applicants, and offer a five-month curriculum for artists, social service professionals and community organizers. The 2016 Fellowship will focus on four communities in St. Louis City and St. Louis County: The Ville and the Greater Ville; Dutchtown; West End and Visitation Park; and Berkley, Dellwood, and Ferguson cities in North St. Louis County. Opera Theatre of Saint Louis celebrates the closing of their 2016 Festival Season with news of significant growth in young audiences and increased engagement from both national and international audiences, including 42 states, six Canadian provinces, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. To date, OTSL’s 2016 Young Friends program has seen 36 percent growth in attendance over 2015’s record-setting year. The City of University City and the Loop Special Business District have collaborated to organize “Thirsty Thursday Block Party,” two brand-new summer events happening on The Loop, in an effort to take advantage of the community space created by recent road closures. The first block part will be Thursday, June 23 from 5-8pm, and will include live music, local musicians, beer tasting, art demonstrations, a dunk tank, and more. Tickets for the Annual Katherine Dunham Technique Seminar, held from July 23-31 at the Annelise Mertz Dance Studio on Washington University in St. Louis’ campus, are currently on sale. The St. Louis Regional Arts Commission’s annual Artist Fellowship program opens for applicants on Tuesday, June 28. The Artist Fellowship is awarded to 10 local artists, and aids in the development and advancement of artistic careers that contribute to the St. Louis community’s vibrant culture. The Cabaret Project of St. Louis released its programming lineup for their 2016 St. Louis Cabaret Festival, scheduled from July 19-24. Headliners include the legendary Marilyn Maye, St. Louis favorite Ann Hampton Callaway, award-winning pianists Billy Stritch and Tedd Firth, Tony-winner Faith Prince, Broadway’s Jason Graae and celebrated Jazz artist Tony DeSare. Tickets for each show are available for purchase online.

The Lawrence Group and Caparo Industries are set to unveil the name of the brand-new, $55 million hotel and development going into the Missouri Theater Building at 3pm today at the corner of Grand Boulevard and Grandel Square. The Missouri Theater Building is the final historic building in need of renovation on Grand Boulevard in Grand Center.  The Rt. Hon. Lord Paul, a long-serving member for the House of Lords in the British Parliament, will be in attendance for the unveiling. 3526 Washington Ave., Grand Center
