Giving back this holiday season is right at your fingertips

The chilly winter weather is upon us— and while we’re excited that it’s now time to break out those trendy touch screen-compatible gloves, we know it’s more important to remember how those gloves can help us give back over the holidays. As you’ve probably guessed, we have an app for that…several in fact.

Your resident ChicGeeks are here to recommend a few apps for the holiday season that make it easy for you to do good deeds and give to great causes. There are actually quite a few new social cause apps that let you jump right in and help others both in your own community and beyond. Most of the ones we test drove had fun interfaces—and the act of giving itself can really brighten your day. Here, we focus on four of our favorites—from some that cost nothing and uses very little of your time, to others that get you a bit more involved. So, whatever your schedule and budget, you can take part in the season of giving.

Touch to Give

iPhone and browser-based
If you’re like many of us, you may have a budget and limited time. Luckily, that doesn’t have to keep you from doing a good deed (or several) each day. Touch to Give is an app that allows you to support causes like animal rights, rainforest protection, global hunger, breast cancer research and others without spending more that a few minutes. All you have to do is click on a sponsored icon, and money is donated to your charity of choice. With the tap of a finger, we just helped support 11.4 square feet of rainforest—not bad for 10 seconds of our time!

iPhone and browser-based
This full-blown mobile shopping app has partnerships in place with more
than 600 retailers—brands like Target, The Gap, True Religion, Toms Shoes and more. Every time you shop, a percentage of your purchase is distributed to the charity of your choice. With 1.5 million charities from which to choose, we’re sure you will find the perfect fit.

For iPhone and Android
Your level of activity is a bit more involved when you use DoGood. The concept is simple: There are 365 random acts of kindness. Every day, the app gives you the opportunity to do good and then share your good deed through the app. Since other users are socially connected, the acts of kindness become significant moments shared amongst the entire community. DoGood promotes good deeds that benefit causes, event and people. Since its launch, DoGood and its community boast over 1,000,000 good deeds and counting!

For iPhone and Android
This app is serious about getting you involved in your community. Trensy has a game-based approach in which you help with tasks for local charities and then check-in once you complete them. You earn points for each mission and can compete with friends. As you complete more tasks, you unlock special rewards for Trensy users only. It’s great for those who like a gaming environment and are motivated by the fun of a little friendly competition.
