All Female Exhibit 'noELLES: Nine Wise Women Bearing Gifts' Opening at PHD Gallery
Christmas traditions have been established over hundreds of years as our holiday stories and rituals are told to children through successive generations. Among the barn animals, Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in his crib, nativity scenes always feature the three wise men bearing gifts. But who is to say that none of the gift bearers were women, or how many there actually were? It’s not an off-the-wall theory and has been considered and debated by scholars. PHD gallery takes the notion one step further with their exhibit, “noELLES: Nine Wise Women Bearing Gifts,” opening with a free public reception for the artists Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8 from 11am to 5pm.
Although we’ve come to celebrate the “Three Wise Men,” there may have been more. There’s no consistency. Some traditions celebrate as many as twelve priestly persons making the journey to see the “miracle.” In the typical PHD Gallery style of creative curation, their holiday créche will feature all women bearing extraordinary art as gifts.
Cleverness aside, the exhibit give visitors the opportunity to view some of St. Louis’ most exciting female artists who work in a great variety mediums, including mixed media, pottery, paintings, ceramics, metals, jewelry, blacksmithing, glass, fibers, porcelain, earthenware and fashion.
The local artists featured in the exhibit are Jeri Au, Lisa Colby, Jo Jasper Dean, Melody Evans, Peg Fetter, Michelle Hamilton, Jenna Jacobs, Ruth Ann Reese, and LaChay Williams. Together they make an exhibit fit for a king.
