#ALIVEHoliday continues this week with tips on throwing the perfect holiday party. A key element in the perfect soirée is creating an inviting atmosphere. When welcoming guests into your home for the first time, you want to make a good impression. Greet your guests with warm scents of the season by doing a little planning and you won’t be scrambling with a Febreeze bottle as your friends are walking through the door. We have a couple of suggestions for creating a festively scented house, with items you probably have in your cabinets.

Quarter an apple and place in a small pan. Fill the pan with water and set to a low simmer. Add a few cinnamon sticks, some whole cloves and a small splash of vanilla extract. Soon your home will be filled with the lasting aroma of cinnamon apple pie. Pro tip: Be careful not to let the water boil away.

The next time you stop into local health food stores like The Natural Way or Golden Grocer, make your way to the essential oils. Choose from a variety of natural scents like peppermint or evergreen. When you’re back home, gather some pine cones from the yard, sprinkle on a small amount of your favorite scent and place them in decorative bowls around the house. Instant atmosphere without the old-fashioned dish of potpourri.

If you prefer the calming glow of candles when you’re expecting guests, they are still a great option. We suggest lighting them 30 minutes before your guests arrive and your home will take on your chosen scent for the evening. Try candles made locally like the E & M Holiday Collection available at CLR-MNSTR.
