ALIVE on the Scene: Lift For Life Academy Fashion Show & Gala
Members of the St. Louis fashion community came dressed in their Sunday best yesterday in support of the fourth annual Lift For Life Academy Fashion Show & Gala. Guests of the Celebrating Success event sipped mimosas at The Ritz Carlton while bidding on silent auction items donated by the local fashion and art communities and witnessing a student-run fashion show of garments created and modeled by students of the Lift for Life fashion program.
Adjunct fashion design teacher Laura Kathleen Baker gave a heartfelt introduction of the program and the meaning it has had for her personally, as well as for the students it benefits. Then, St. Louis’ Christine Buck called the runway show, sharing the inspiring stories of the students and the garments they created. Many of the garments were designed using re-purposed materials, and all of the student designers had big plans for their futures, whether in fashion design, medical and law professions or the navy/armed forces.
Executive Director and co-founder Marshall Cohen presented awards to key donors and supporters. Mary Jo Liberstein received the John Mann Presidential Award for her visionary support of the Academy and its students; Sanford and Gloria Spitzer were recognized with the Founders’ Award for their longtime support of the Academy; and Michael and Carol Staenberg were given the Community Partner Award for their corporate support of the Academy and the improvement it has brought Academy students.
Spotted among the crowd were honorary chairs Mary Strauss, Lewis Reed and Laura Kathleen Baker. Additional supporters in attendance included: Susan Sherman, Tania Beasley-Jolly, Sara Burke, Marylen Mann, Rena Hajat Carroll, Ellen Soule and Gregg and Alyson Garland.
