ALIVE On The Scene: Caleres Emerging Designer Award Finalist Announcment And Cocktail Party
Yesterday evening in NYC, Caleres, the Saint Louis Fashion Fund and fashion’s most important editors, influencers and professionals toasted the top six finalists for the Caleres Emerging Designer Award at the Caleres-Sam Edelman Showroom: Julie Haus and Jason Alkire (Haus Alkire), Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta (Eckhaus Latta), Azede Jean-Pierre (Azede Jean-Pierre), Katharine Polk (Houghton), Brandon Sun (Brandon Sun) and Jordana Warmflash (NOVIS).
The intimate affair had no shortage of “wow” factors: Caleres CEO, President and Chairman Diane Sullivan hosted the event, along with Sam and Libby Edelman, Tomoko Ogura, Fern Mallis, James LaForce, Gary Wassner and Derek Blasberg. Guests, including Al Roker, Rachel Comey, Timo Weiland, Danielle Snyder and Todd Thomas, as well as key editors and media personalities from Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, InStyle, New York Times, Fashion Times, One Clique, New York Observer, Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily were also in attendance.
Custom drinks and hors d’oeuvres (including The Louie champagne cocktail, named after Sam Edelman’s popular boot) were shared high above the streets of Midtown in Edelman’s new space, where the finalists were introduced to the media by Saint Louis Fashion Fund chair Susan Sherman and Caleres Emerging Designer Award chair Tania Beasley-Jolly.
Diane Sullivan welcomed the crowd and spoke of the importance of the long-time partnership between Caleres and Saint Louis Fashion Week before introducing Elizabeth Tucker, co-founder of STLFW, who recognized Sullivan “for her vision and realizing that a huge part of this equation is attracting, retaining and developing designers as part of [St. Louis’] entrepreneurial ecosystem.”
The finalists are slated to showcase their collections during Saint Louis Fashion Week on Nov. 4 where the winner of the Caleres Emerging Designer Award will be selected by an elite roster of jurors, announced by the Saint Louis Fashion Fund and awarded a $25,000 cash grant to support their ongoing work.
“The Caleres Emerging Designer Award has grown with the help of the Saint Louis Fashion Fund to become a true mechanism for attracting top design talent to the St. Louis region, drawing a national spotlight to our city,” says STLFW co-founder Elizabeth Tucker. “Saint Louis Fashion Week is excited to be hosting these designers for our 2015 season. In addition, we’re thrilled to announce that Saint Louis Fashion Week will be facilitating programming for local designers to connect with Fern Mallis, an STLFW mentor and juror for this year’s Award, as a part of our Fashion Week activities.”
Update: Brandon Sun has withdrawn as a finalist for the Caleres Emerging Designer Award citing personal reasons. Sun wishes his fellow designers well and hopes to show in St. Louis in the future.
