5 Questions With Fashion Designer A.J. Thouvenot
A.J. Thouvenot is one of those designers who will leave a smile on your face after even the shortest interaction. We caught up with the fun-loving local and “Project Runway” alum at the recent TRUNK show at Moxi Enterprises where he gave us the scoop on his newest Andy J. collection and his upcoming—and much anticipated—runway event, American Trash alongside fellow STL runway vet, Cindy Henry of Rebel Tart.
ALIVE: How would you describe an Andy J Collection?
A.J.: Quirky Glamour. I like clothes that have a sense of humor or a bizarre sort of beauty about them.
ALIVE: What is your favorite thing to make?
A.J.: I’ve always loved making over the top party clothes and stage costumes, but recently I’ve really started to love making menswear. As soon as I think I have a favorite design, I end up loving something new!
ALIVE: What trend/trends/clothing styles are you loving right now?
A.J.: I’m loving the summer trend of mesh and athletic details. I really like how that trend is both masculine and feminine at the same time. I also think the way the midriff has come back in a new way is really great. Emphasizing the higher part of the waist is so much more flattering.
ALIVE: If you could only own 3 items, what would they be?
A.J.: My sewing machine, my music collection, a tunic, preferably black, but I’d settle for neon.
ALIVE: What are some of your current projects?
A.J.: On July 12 my brand “Andy J.” is teaming up with local designer Rebel Tart for American Trash at 2720 Cherokee. It’s going to be a wild Americana fashion show featuring clothes made out of anything and everything! After that, I am also participating in the Garbage Bag Gala on July 25 at Moulin!
