5 Emerging Designers To Watch At NYFW
Fashion fans all over the globe are looking forward to the kickoff of New York Fashion Week‘s spring runway shows that will take place for the last time in Lincoln Center Feb. 12-19. Although there are countless shows on our must-see list, a few emerging designers have specifically captured our attention, quickly rising through the ranks as top contenders in the newbie designer world. Here are a few of our early favorites:
CG by Chris Gelinas: An impressive showing the past two seasons has put designer Chris Gelinas on the “who to watch” list for fashion lovers and editors alike. His innovative approach and attention to detail play on the juxtaposition of traditional techniques and modern luxury, with his designs already being spotted on starlets from New York to L.A.
When & Where: Catch CG by Chris Gelinas Saturday, Feb. 14 at The Standard Hotel’s Highline Room from 1-2pm.
Collina Strada: The Saint Louis Fashion Week Emerging Designer Competition vet and handbag wiz Hillary Taymour is making big moves in the Big Apple after her impressive Spring/Summer showcase she premiered at The Standard Hotel last fall (and again on the runway of STLFW). This season, the designer is sure to showcase an equally impressive follow-up as an official MADE Fashion Week Designer at Milk Studios.
When & Where: Catch Collina Strada on Feb. 14 at Milk Studios from 7-8pm.
Charles Youssef: With a clean point of view that could be compared to designers like Yigal Azrouël, Charles Youssef made an early impression just after showcasing his graduate collection at London Fashion Week in 2010, following that up with a big boost from Lady Gaga who then purchased the collection for her 2010 concert tour. After bouncing around to various design houses (including Calvin Klein and Gareth Pugh), Youssef officially launched his eponymous line for Resort 2015 with a beautiful collection that was inspired by origami.
When & Where: See Charles Youssef’s premiere his newest collection on Feb. 11 at 91 Horatio from 1-3pm.
Hellessy: Founded in 2012 by designer Sylvie Millstein, Hellessy combines Millstein’s business savvy (thanks her most notable experience as the General Merchandise Manger for Chanel Japan), and penchant for pared-down elegance for her line that has sparked the interest of fashion professionals all over the country.
When & Where: View Millstein’s newest collection for Hellessy at ArtBeam on Feb. 11 from 11am-12pm.
Sandy Liang: Newcomer Sandy Liang caught our attention not only because of her fashion forward yet streetwear friendly approach to womenswear, but also most humorously, for her recent interview with Milk Studios citing one of her main inspirations as being “grandmas in Chinatown.” Practical, thrift shop-inspired and chic, Liang represents a new generation of carefree cool leaving fashion mavens everywhere at the edge of their seats to see what she will come up with next.
When & Where: Catch Sandy Liang at MADE Fashion Week at Milk Studios on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7pm.
